This question is very similar for asking Chinese ethnic based in Thailand to describe themselves?
As I am Tai from Tachileik (Shan) and consider myself as Tai (Shan) only, even I am holding a Myanmar passport. Whenever I am with Burmese people, they will know by instinct or action that we are not Burmese. We don't speak fluent Burmese, we don't speak loud like Burmese, we can't eat authentic Burmese as everyday, above all we don't have a mindset or attitude like Burmese at all.
Most of Tai people's mindset are leaded by Calmness, Peacefulness, Humbleness, freehanded & Pride. These positive & weakness qualities made Burmese invasion to Shan State very easily through trickery by PangLong Agreement in1947.
Tai people in Myanmar are very proud people as Tai, we will never be like Burmese.
Some Tai adult & youth might adulterate with Burmese culture or people, so by that it will lead and accept themselves as more Burmese.
Most of Eastern Tai Yai people from Keng Tung and Tachileik are more fluently speaking Thai than Burmese. We can understand Thai language since we were born, whether as for Burmese language we need to learn.
Come to the point > Most of Northern Thailand (Lanna) people might still known that we are from the same cultivar as sharing almost the same culture, dress, food, tradition and part of history.
Horribly, Majority of Thai people especially in Bangkok regions don't know much about us. Oversea Chinese, wherever they go they will be Chinese. But I hope that one day, we are from the same races : Tai ahom in India, Tai Lue & Tai Nua in Chinese, Tai Yai in Shan State, Tai Laos, Tai Dam in vietnam & Thailand will realize that we were once family trace back long long ago.

คนไทยทั่วไปคิดหรือรู้สึกว่าคนไทใหญ่เป็นคนไทยหรือคนพม่าคะ
คนไทใหญ่กับคนไทยวนหรือล้านนามีสถานะความเป็นมาที่เท่าเทียมกัน แต่ล้านนาหรือไทยวนได้มาอยู่กับรัฐไทยที่เป็นไท-กะไดเหมือนกัน แต่ไทใหญ่ต้องไปอยู่กับพม่าที่ไม่ใช่ไท-กะได
แล้วคนไทใหญ่ที่มา ยู่เมืองไทยนานๆหรือรักประเทศไทยควรมีสิทธิ์ได้สัญชาติไทยหรือเปล่าคะ เพราะขนาดคนไทยมุสลิม(เชื้อสายมาเล)ปักษ์ใต้ยังได้สัญชาติไทย หรือคนเชื้อสายจีนแท้ๆอย่างเจ้าสัวหลายคนก็ได้สัญชาติไทย ที้งที่ไม่ใช่ไท-กะได
