การระเบิดของข้อมูลหรือ Information Explosion คือการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็วของจำนวนสารสนเทศหรือข้อมูลที่พิมพ์และผลกระทบของการมีจำนวนมาก (The information explosion is the rapid increase in the amount of published information or data and the effects of this abundance) (Hilbert, 2015)  ซี่งทำให้เกิดปัญหาในการบริหารสารสนเทศ (information management) โดยเฉพาะข้อมูลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่สามารถไปสืบค้นดาวโหลดได้อย่างง่ายดายกว่าเดิม  เกิดปัญหาสารสนทศล้น (information overload) ดังนั้น จึงต้องมีระบบการจัดการสารสนเทศ การสังเคราะห์ การจัดกลุ่มและจัดระบบเพื่อให้ใช้ได้ง่ายและสะดวกต่อการสืบค้น
