ALMATY, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The investigation into the Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plane crash near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan, has revealed the discovery of external objects made of metal on the aircraft, according to the preliminary report released by the Kazakh Ministry of Transport on Tuesday.
An initial examination of the remaining fragments revealed multiple instances of penetrating and non-penetrating damage of various sizes and shapes to the tail of the fuselage, fin, stabilizer, elevator, and rudder, the report said.
Similar damage was found on the left engine and wing of the aircraft, as well as on other units and components. In some areas, the damage had a regular rectangular shape, it added.
The document includes photographs showing evidence of damage to the hydraulic systems "prior to impact with the Earth's surface, probably caused by external objects that penetrated the aircraft's components."
Further investigations will be conducted to determine the nature and origin of these objects.
The report consists of 53 pages and contains information about the flight history, damage to the aircraft, meteorological data, details about the wreckage, and more.
Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny crashed near the Kazakh city of Aktau on Dec. 25, 2024, with 62 passengers and five crew members on board. Thirty-eight people were killed in the crash and 29 were rescued, according to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Emergency Situations. ■
