When did Mother Earth first appear in Buddhism?
I have read the "Jataka". 
I read in the "Jataka" that the earth became a witness to Buddha's merits, but Mother Earth did not appear.
In Thai and Cambodian temples, there are many murals and statues of Mother Earth.
Did Buddhism merge with other religions or folk beliefs?
