Founded in 1997, ppantip.com is the largest online discussion forum in Thailand. It has 30 million monthly visitors. The founder of the popular website in Thailand is Wanchat Padungrat.
In 1995, Padungrat started a computer equipment trading business with his friend, which operated between Taiwan and Thailand. His Taiwanese supplier told him that it would be much better to use email to discuss contact (before using email, he used to use fax). Padungrat shared that the first ISP in Thailand was KSC's Internet, which provides email services with 120 minutes of internet usage per month. Padungrat realizes that even after using email, there is still plenty of time left. Instead of wasting time, Padungrat set up Netscape and surfed the internet. He was very impressed with the content and thought Netscape was really the internet.
While being impressed by the World Wide Web. Padungrat lamented the lack of Thai content, which inspired him to create the Thai website ppantip.com, which started as an online magazine in 1997. Padungrat was not satisfied, so he added it to a secret list to try his luck. He noticed that the geeks used his advertising site to buy and sell computer parts. Hence the name 1.0 Pantip Kick Start in the form of an online magazine with backdoor programs.
Inspired by email, one event that inspired Padungrat was a conversation with a doctor via email
. The doctor emailed him and suggested that his website be interesting. But he can add a voice to make it more interesting. Padungrat replied and asked how to do it. The doctor then sent him two paragraphs of instructions on how to do it.
Making money through ads
While the growth was great, money was still needed to pay the bills. 15 years ago, Padungrat lamented, most media buyers weren’t looking at the internet for media placements. Whenever he called ad agencies, they usually referred him to the media buyers who knew little about the web.
Things started to change when Intel Australia decided to buy ad spots on Pantip. Padungrat said that that was one of the turning points for Pantip. Intel, as a strong brand, caught the attention of many ad agencies who started to look at the internet more closely for media placements.
New
Pantip after more than a decade of sticking to the design and infrastructure first built by tiered days. Padungrat Finally Phantip also changed its design earlier this year. The transition takes about 18 months to complete.
Padungrat said the new design and basic technology reduce the burden. New Pantip writes from scratch, making the site more agile and scalable. Adding new features is now much easier. For example, the Community Groups feature is only available with new technology. The new interface also allows users to customize their own pages. Padungrat is excited about the future of Pantip and the new infrastructure. But it declined to share more about future product features.
