KUALA LUMPUR: Rio Olympic silver medallists Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong are ready to put their differences behind as they begin a “new” journey with their junior partners.
V Shem will pair up with Teo Ee Yi while Wee Kiong will combine with Ong Yew Sin at the French Open in Paris from Oct 24-29.
The new pairs have also have been named for the Bitburger Open in Germany from Oct 31-Nov 5.
Actually, the two so-called new pairs have played together before and won titles.
V Shem-Ee Yi bagged the Malaysian International Challenge title at the 2012 edition in Kuching while Wee Kiong-Yew Sin emerged champions at the National Grand Prix Finals in Ipoh this year.
V Shem is pumped up to start afresh with Ee Yi.
“I sensed an end to my partnership with Wee Kiong after our second-round defeat at the World Championships (in Glasgow last month). I was prepared,” said V Shem.
“Our personalities are different. We’ve tried all that we could and it’s best we try something new. It was good while it lasted. I’ll always remember how we defeated Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea en route to winning the silver in the Olympics (in Rio de Janeiro last year).
“It’s time to move on. I’ll try to make it work with Ee Yi. We need to move up the rankings fast as there are many major tournaments next year.”
Wee Kiong too has promised to give it a shot with Yew Sin.
“I felt that V Shem and I could have improved had we been given a little more time,” said Wee Kiong.
“We had a special year in 2016. We won silver in Rio. We bagged the Denmark Open and World Superseries Finals. But now that the coaches have decided to split us up, it’s time to look forward.
“Yew Sin has lots of potential. I’ve played with him before. The next two European tournaments will give us an indication as to where we stand on the international stage.”
