Former Leicester City coach Claudio Ranieri is in the running to take over as the new coach of the Thailand national team, according to reports.
The news follows the resignation of coach Kiatisuk Senamuang last week. Kiatisuk quit after Thailand suffered heavy World Cup qualifying defeats to Saudi Arabia and Japan last week left them bottom of their Asian qualifying group with just one point from seven games.
The surprise departure of Kiatisuk has led to speculation over his successor, with Ranieri and former Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella among the names rumoured to be under consideration.
Ranieri has links to Thailand following his successful stint with the Premier League champions, who are owned by a Thai businessman and would certainly be a popular choice with fans.
The Italian and his team visited Thailand last year after the Foxes shock win at the behest of Leicester’s Thai sponsors King Power.
Although a popular choice, Ranieri’s last foray into international management with Greece was not a success and saw him sacked after a defeat to the Faroe Islands in 2014.
Former Argentina boss Sabella, who took Argentina to the 2014 World Cup final, has also been linked with the job.
Whoever eventually fills the role will have a hard act to follow in replacing the popular Kiatisuk, a former Thai international striker who helped Thailand win the AFF Suzuki Cup twice and qualify for the AFC Asian Cup.
