TOT and Advanced Wireless Network, a subsidiary of Advanced Info Service (AIS), signed a six-month contract on Tuesday that will see AWN trial-roaming on the state agency’s 2.1-gigahertz spectrum, said a TOT source.
During the trial period, AWN will provide wireless broadband service to its mobile-phone subscribers on the spectrum. The company will pay a monthly roaming fee of Bt325 million to TOT.
This contract is part of a planned strategic partnership between TOT and AWN, which hope to sign an official contract after the six-month trial period. If the permanent deal is struck, AWN will pay Bt3.9 billion a year to TOT for the roaming fee.
As part of the partnership agreement, AWN will create a new 2.1GHz network for TOT and will roam its subscribers on the network on a wholesale/resale basis. AWN will use 80 per cent of the total capacity under the partnership deal, while TOT will allocate the remaining 20 per cent for other interested companies.
TOT is the first operator to launch a third-generation cellular service on the 2.1GHz spectrum since 2009. The number of subscribers to its 2.1GHz service has dropped to only 100,000 from the peak of 600,000 a few years ago.
TOT and AWN signed a memorandum of understanding on a strategic partnership for using the 2.1GHz spectrum on March 29. The MoU was only for AWN to use the spectrum on a trial basis without payment.
In a related matter, on June 30, AWN reached a deal with TOT on leasing from the state agency the existing 2G network on the 900-megahertz spectrum and telecom towers. TOT will get a total of Bt5.6 billion a year from the deal, of which Bt2 billion is from leasing out its 2G network and Bt3.6 billion from leasing out its telecom towers.
Currently AIS holds 10MHz of the 900MHz spectrum, 15MHz of the 1,800MHz spectrum and 15MHz of the 2.1GHz band. The partnership deal with TOT will boost AIS's capacity to provide service to its mobile-phone customers in a highly competitive market.
True Corp group holds 10MHz of the 900MHz spectrum, 15MHz of the 1,800MHz band, and 15MHz of 2.1GHz. It has partnered with CAT Telecom to provide service via the 15MHz CAT holds on the 850MHz spectrum. TOT reported this week that in the first eight months of the year, it earned Bt18.125 billion of revenue, while its expenditure was Bt20 billion. It posted a loss of Bt1.928 billion in EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) and a net loss of Bt10.824 billion.
TOT forecasts that its full-year revenue will be Bt28.76 billion and expenditure Bt30.9 billion, for a loss of Bt2.2 billion in EBITDA and a Bt10.573-billion net loss.
Apart from the 2.1GHz spectrum, TOT has 60MHz of the 2.3MHz spectrum, for which TOT plans to seek a strategic partner to offer wireless broadband service jointly.
