NCT promotions are expected to accelerate. SM have typically shied away from giving concerts to groups before two years of promotion but they want to break that barrier. It’s interesting to note that some of the top people in the company have been commenting on how quickly SM’s own and competitor groups took to get to be able to do a Dome tour. It’s likely that they want to rush to the first concert to be within 1~2 years after debut and then break their own record of 3 years 7 months with EXO for a Dome tour.
(Note: Second place is 2PM at 4 years. TVXQ stand at 5 years but the rest like Big Bang, SHINee etc are at 6 years+)
So far, debuts are going somewhat as scheduled, with the first NCT units being given their debuts in early April. As I mentioned before, there were indeed members of NCT that were going to float around and promote in more than one unit.
We should then be seeing the Chinese units in Beijing and Shanghai debut in the latter half of the year. Third Chinese unit still doesn’t have a “home city” to speak of, despite being scheduled to debut this year. My personal suspicion, based on how resources are being moved, is Hong Kong to work under a division of Dreammaker.
I mentioned on twitter that NCT are looking at 5~6 more songs this year. This is how many NCT have assigned to them already but have not completed recording. In fact, some of the people running the NCT project are recommending more than 5~6 to be promoted. The promotion campaign is as aggressive as it is because as mentioned above, they want to push for public recognition as early as possible (since they already have a somewhat established core fandom) so that they can rush the concert schedules and claim management success.
NCT in SE Asia and S America are stalling. SM are focused on the core markets of CJK for now, with the hopes of China being a domestic market for them now, since Alibaba has gotten involved with them, a deal that I pointed out would happen back in 2014 and only was announced this year in 2016. There are a few local companies in those territories that SM want to make partnerships with for a Joint Venture, then export their training and production systems out to those areas… but nothing concrete has been agreed upon.
What’s interesting is that NCT in Europe has come up in conversation for the first time. If it passes initial screening on an internal basis, expect to see news articles mentioning it in the coming months but this seems like a far-off dream in the future, and is not currently being entertained as a 2017 plan.
