Kyushu Earthquake Information
Last updated: April 16, 2016, 18:00 (Japan Time)
A strong earthquake centered in Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu occurred in the evening of April 14, followed by an even stronger one in the night of April 16. In addition, strong tremors centered in Oita Prefecture are occurring, as well. Strong tremors are expected to continue for several more days, and tourists are advised not to visit the region in the meantime. Damage is centered around Kumamoto Prefecture where dozens of buildings have collapsed, roads have been damaged and landslides have occurred. Strong rain is predicted for tonight and tomorrow, which could cause further damage through landslides.
Transportation
Trains have been stopped in many areas of Kyushu. Currently, trains are running in the south around Miyazaki and Kagoshima, and in the north around Fukuoka and Nagasaki. The Kyushu Shinkansen is not running along its entire length between Hakata and Kagoshima-Chuo, but the Sanyo Shinkansen is running between Hakata and Shin-Osaka. The Hohi Line, which connects Kumamoto via Aso with Oita was damaged by a landslide and is likely to remain out of service for an extended period.
Kumamoto Airport's terminal building suffered some damage in the earthquake of April 16. The airport will be closed today, and all flights are cancelled. Other airports on Kyushu are open and operating.
The trans-Kyushu bus between Kumamoto and Beppu is not running. Many other buses are not running, either.
Expressways around Kumamoto and Oita Prefecture are closed.
