หลังจากที่เราได้ทำความรู้จักกับวิธีใช้ neither แล้ว อาจารย์เชื่อว่าผู้อ่านหลาย ๆ ท่านคงนึกถึงคำว่า nor ด้วย

แล้ว neither...nor ล่ะใช้อย่างไร

วันนี้ อาจารย์มีเคล็ดลับมาฝากครับ



Neither...nor มีความหมายเหมือนกันกับ neither ซึ่งก็คือ "ไม่ใช่ทั้งสองอย่าง / ไม่ใช่สิ่งแรกและไม่ใช่สิ่งที่สอง" แต่มีวิธีใช้แตกต่างกันเล็กน้อยครับ:

1. โครงสร้าง neither...nor ใช้เชื่อมสองความคิดที่เป็นเชิงปฏิเสธหรือลบทั้งคู่ แต่จะค่อนข้างเป็นทางการครับ เช่น:
- They neither eat healthily nor exercise. (ถ้าเป็นภาษาทั่วไปจะกล่าวว่า They don't eat healthily or exercise.)
- The instruction was neither clearly written nor easily understood. (ในภาษาทั่วไปจะใช้ The instruction wasn't clearly written or easily understood.)

2. บางครั้งเราอาจใช้ neither...nor เชื่อมมากกว่าสองความคิดครับ เช่น:
- They neither looked, spoke, nor interacted with the crowd.
- The weather was neither cool, cloudy, nor windy.

3. ในการใช้โครงสร้าง neither...nor เราจะไม่เริ่มต้นประโยคที่สมบูรณ์ (complete sentence / independent clause) ด้วย neither ครับ เช่น:
- There are neither people nor animals here. (เราไม่ใช้ Neither there are people nor animals here. X)
- I can neither confirm nor deny the story. (ไม่ใช่ Neither I can confirm nor deny the story. X)

4. เมื่อใช้ neither...nor เชื่อมประธานที่เป็นเอกพจน์ (singular subject) โดยปกติจะใช้กับคำกริยาเอกพจน์ (singular verb) ส่วนคำกริยาพหูพจน์ (plural verb) ก็ใช้ได้เหมือนกัน แต่จะมีความเป็นทางการน้อยกว่าครับ เช่น:
- Neither Michael nor Michelle was at home. (เป็นทางการ—formal)
- Neither Michael nor Michelle were at home. (เป็นทางการน้อยกว่า—less formal)
