Wat Umong was built in 1296 by King Mung Rai of Lanna kingdom. After King Mung Rai died, King Gue Na of Lanna kingdom was continued the restoration of this temple and he was built the tunnel in the temple. That tunnel was still visible until now. In 1947, Chuen Sirirose was built the Meditation Center in Wat Umong for people who want to study about Buddhism.

A particular interest is a replica of Ashok Pillar that similar to the Pillar at Vaishali and the Pillar at Sarnath Museum. The Ashok Pillar has four lion and a wheel at the base and larger wheel on the top that look like an umbrella for the lion. The four lion head is adopted as the National Emblem of India. Another interesting fact about Wat Umong is the zoo in Wat Umong. In 2008, Wat Umong was a little zoo where adopted many animals that was hunted by hunters and escaped from the wood near the temple to the temple’s area such as deer, gaurs, bantengs and pheasants
