What is color correction?
It's to alter your skin tone to the desired color or effect.
This could be eliminating the redness, dullness, or sallowness on your face. It also includes brightening up those dark undereye circles, or even brightening and adding an all over glow to your complexion.
What are some colors that corrects skin tone and what are some examples of color correction products?
1) Tinted makeup primers or makeup base
2) Under eye concealers that are tinted (in a different color than your foundation)
3) Cream concealers that come in different colors
- The word 'colors' mentioned in includes salmon, peach, pink, violet/purple, blue, green, yellow, yellowy-orange.
Theory behind color-correction (which color color correct what?)
There's a very simple theory to explain the idea of color
Take a look at the color wheel below. Link to picture

Colors that are opposite each other (ie. red-green, blue-orange, violet-yellow) are called complementary colors. When two complementary colors mix, they produce a neutral grayish color. In other words, this means that they cancel each other out! That's it guys, that's the theory behind color-correction in makeup.
Now, I'll break down the different colors and walk you through how to correct which imperfection, and how you could get your desired effect
Redness on on the face:
- Rosacea, inflammation, redness-around the nose, etc.
- For all-over redness, use green-tinted primers or makeup bases
- For redness that is more clustered like acn
and there or redness in small patches on your face (like around the nose), use green-tinted concealers, becuase they do not migrate to other areas aournd the face where there's no need for color-correction.
*Don't color correct the skin when, there's nothing wrong with it. If you add green to your complexion where there's no redness, your skin would appear gray-ish and slightly ashy (been there done that! Don't repeat my mistake)
Dullness:
- When there's a slight purple hue ot the face
- For lighter complexion: Use yellow-based primer or makeup base
- For medium complexion: Use yellowy-orange-based primer or makeup base
- For dark complexion: Use a warm-brown (bronzy) make up primer or base
Sallowness:
- When you feel there's too much yellow in your skin.
- For fair to light complexion: Use blue-tinted make up primer or base to add radiance
- For medium to dark complexion: Use violet or purple-tinted make up primer or base
Dark underye circles:
- For cool-toned skin your undereye circles will appear bluish: Use pinky/salmon-colored undereye concealer
- For light to medium warm-toned skin your undereye circles will appear bluish-green: Use peachy-colored undereye concealer.
-For deep to very deep warm-toned skin your undereye circles will appear greenish-gray: Use reddish-based undereye concealer.
Adding a glow/brightening your complexion:
- Use pink-tinted make up base or pirmer. This works for most skin tone, but for those with deeper skin tone beaware of the ashy look that this might cause.
All in all, wear a
SMILE, because a smile not only costs nothing, but it's the best make up to wear on anyone's face and it brings joy to those around you too!! Spread love! ;) xx
Side note:
If you do not have uneven skin tone or imperfections on your complexion, I do not recommend you to use color correcting product(s), becuase it would not only be a waste of money/product to do so, but this could affect the longevity of your make up. Think about your face like a sponge. If you add a lot of product to it, then the sponge would have a difficult time holding the products in it, but with less product the sponge could absorb better
So make sure you use make up products your really need to achieve the desired effect on your complexion! <3
Take care, enjoy your day, and see you guys in my next post!
