In a rematch of last year's Wimbledon final, Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil once again upset top doubles team Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, snapping the two-time defending champions' 14-match winning streak at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday night.
Sock and Pospisil claimed two key breaks in the 6-4, 6-4 victory, needing just 62 minutes to secure their place in the semi-finals against Marcin Matkowski and Nenad Zimonjic.
"I think we just played a pretty flawless match today," Pospisil told the crowd of nearly 15,000 in a courtside interview. "Jack has been playing great all week. We were so excited to be on the court, and we were enjoying ourselves. That was the main thing."
The American/Canadian duo hasn't competed together since the 2014 US Open thanks to Sock's hip injury at the beginning of the year. That hiccup has clearly not slowed them down.
"It's 100 per cent natural chemistry,” said Pospisil. “We haven't worked on anything. We don't do any doubles drills, nothing."
In just five tournaments together, the pair has amassed a 19-2 record, taking titles at Wimbledon and Atlanta and reaching the final in Cincinnati last summer. Aged 22 and 24, respectively, perhaps
it's no surprise that the Sock/Pospisil partnership began with a text.
"I sent him a text a few weeks before Wimbledon, and said, 'Hey, do you want to play doubles?'" Sock explained. "I actually needed his help to get in based on ranking. I was fortunate enough to have him play with me.
"We love playing doubles and with the success we've had, we're obviously going to continue to play for a while, I hope," Sock continued. "It's a big part of our success. We stay very relaxed, smiling, joking around. It keeps it light. We play loose and are able to hit our shots."
