Andy Murray ended months of speculation on Sunday as he announced that his new coach will be former WTA World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Amelie Mauresmo.

Speaking on Sunday at the Aegon Championships, where he is the defending champion, Murray said about the appointment process: “I went through a similar sort of process to how I’ve normally done it. I spoke to her a few times on the phone and when I was in Paris I met her before the tournament.

“We chatted a little bit about it, whether she’d be up for doing it. There was a will from both sides to give it a go and see how it works out. We’ll try during the grass-court [tournaments] and hopefully we’ll both enjoy it.

“She’s obviously a fantastic player,” continued Murray, who has been searching for a coach since splitting with Ivan Lendl just before the Sony Open Tennis in Miami. “She won Wimbledon, she was World No. 1, won the Australian Open. Just from speaking to her, she’s very calm, she’s a good person. I think we will communicate well together and I think that’s a very important part of coaching. I hope it works well.”

Addressing the subject of appointing a female as his coach, Murray explained, “To be honest, for me, I obviously worked with my Mum for a long time and then even periods when I was 16, 17 years old. For me it doesn’t feel like a very different thing.

“Obviously I wasn’t paying my Mum so it’ll be a little bit different this time around because I’ll be employing Amelie! I think it’s exciting, something a bit new for me, something a bit fresh and hopefully it works well.”

Mauresmo, who had a spell coaching fellow French national Michael Llodra in 2010, held a press conference at Roland Garros on Sunday. "I think he's maybe looking for something different, about emotions and sensitive things," said the Frenchwoman. "All I'm interested in is to be able to help him in his goals. That's about it. For me it's a challenge. I want to take it.

"[I won't travel] the whole year, not as full time, but a significant amount of weeks that we have agreed on and should be good for everyone.

"The whole point is for him to win more Grand Slams." Mauresmo continued. "Of course he's going to defend his title at Wimbledon. That's his No. 1 priority. It's not going to be easy. I'll help him as best as I can. The point is not to say it has to work immediately from the word 'go'. Miracles don't happen overnight. Even though you can give him, I don't know, new dynamics, it will not happen overnight. I want the best for him. So that's good."
