In an achievement that sounds so exhausting it may make you want to lie down, Kim Allan of New Zealand broke the women’s world record for distance covered without sleeping, as she ran 500 kilometers – 310 miles and change – in Auckland before making it home to spend Christmas with her family.
Allan is a mother of four and a veteran of competitive 24-hour runs. Her achievement, dubbed “Sleepless in Auckland,” erased the old world record of 486 kilometers set by American Pam Reed in 2005 and took the better part of four days. Allan attempted to break the record last year but could not continue beyond 370 kilometers.
