Welcome to this brand new column, ‘City Life’. Each month we will dig up useful information about some of the world’s more interesting cities. Of course with AEC just around the corner – and the low travel budget here at NJ Tower – it makes good sense to start with our neighbours first. So – no disrespect to any of the other great cities within the ASEAN community we’ve chosen to kick off with the ASEAN powerhouse: Singapore!
One a British colony and then occupied by the Japanese army during World War ll, Singapore’s strategic location has always made is desirable. Since 1963 it had complete independence to make its own decisions. Initially the strict parent – ask any kid worldwide what they’ve heard about Singapore’s chewing gum ban – and even though it still uses the cane as a measure of punishment sometime, it seems to have become more confident in itself and is these days a dynamic ‘World City’.
Singapore’s constant push to build a comfortable lifestyle on an area of land not much bigger that a football pitch has also made it the ‘look-too’ locations for global architects. You’ve just got to scan the skyline.
