ข่าวร้ายสำหรับแฟนหนัง The Mortal Instruments

Sad news, Shadowhunters. The Wrap is reporting that the second Mortal Instruments movie, titled City of Ashes has been delayed. Just a week before Harald Zwart was scheduled to begin shooting, production has been shut down indefinitely. On the subject, Martin Moszkowicz gave a statement:

“Constantin Film” has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of ‘City of Ashes’ was a decision we did not take lightly. But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place,” said executive producer Martin Moszkowicz of Constantin. “‘The Mortal Instruments’ series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a bestselling book series. While taking Cassandra Clare’s vision to the screen, we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise.”

With the film’s $60 million budget (plus another $60 million for a huge marketing campaign involving a world tour for the cast) not earned back through ticket sales, this makes sense. Moving forward with gusto just wouldn’t be a good business decision. With young adult franchises that have quite big fan-bases doing poorly at the box office left and right, studios are going to have to get creative to hook audiences.
