After a number of weeks of speculation about who would be the next Reggae Boyz head coach, that doubt has finally been removed as Captain Burrell released his name at a press conference today at the JFF Headquaters. The new head coach is Mr. Winfried Schafer from Mayen, Germany. He is the first German to coach the Reggae Boyz.
The 63 year old head coach has an impressive resume both coaching internationally and coaching club football. The first international assignment he had was coaching Cameroon in 2001 and through it he created a bloom within their football. In the 3 year spell he had in Africa, he helped Cameroon win the African Nations Cup in 2002. In doing so he played an instrumental role with his tactics in beating the likes of Senegal, Mali and Egypt in that tournament. He also helped Cameroon qualify for the 2002 World Cup and brought an attractive brand to football to Cameroon.
This was also shown in the 2003 Confederation Cup where he displayed good tactics as Cameroon beat the likes of Brazil, Turkey and Colombia to get to the final of the Confederations Cup and eventually lost in extra time to France in the final.
The former Thailand coach also stated that he believes that the quality of players Jamaica has can get the job done and get the country to Brazil. He stated that he understands that time is limited so he is going to do his best for Jamaica.
Coach Schafer stated that he is eager to meet the players and he wants players to play with heart, zeal and tenacity. This is certainly another chapter in Jamaican football, a chapter which could bring bountiful rewards.
Welcome to Jamaica coach.
